Since the opening of its 2015 shipping season in April, bulk cargo volumes through the Port of Oshawa are way up. From asphalt to calcium chloride to steel, shipments are up by an unprecedented 93 percent over the same time last year, the Oshawa Port Authority announced today.

Steel continues to be the Port of Oshawa’s leading cargo, with more than 105 thousand metric tonnes shipped through the port as of the end of June. That’s twice the tonnage compared to the same period last year.

“So far, this is one of our strongest shipping seasons ever,” said Donna Taylor, President and CEO of the Oshawa Port Authority. “With the rapid growth in GTA home and condo construction, there’s been strong demand for steel rebar. We’re pleased the port is supporting both the steel and residential construction industries.“

Construction is also underway on a 45,000 square foot transit shed on Farewell Avenue. It’s expected to be completed by September. This location was chosen because of its close proximity to the new rail spur.

“The investments we’ve made in the port over the past year, from the new cargo pad to the rail spur have succeeded in attracting new companies, and giving current port customers the confidence to expand,” said Gary Valcour, Chair of the Oshawa Port Authority. “The port truly is a leader in driving the local and regional economy.”

The Port of Oshawa handles $23 million worth of cargo annually, from salt and steel products to asphalt and grain. The movement of cargo through the Port of Oshawa supports 294 jobs, and raises $6 million annually in federal and provincial taxes. That’s in addition to local revenues that are generated by port customers.
