OSHAWA - The Port of Oshawa is doing its part to reduce its environmental footprint. It’s signing on with Green Marine, joining as many as 240 ship operators, seaway corporations, terminals, shipyards and other ports across North America in demonstrating a clear commitment to the environment. Green Marine is a voluntary program aimed at encouraging the marine industry to go above and beyond environmental requirements.

“We’re delighted to join Green Marine and make a measurable difference in the Port of Oshawa’s environmental performance,” said Donna Taylor, President and CEO of the Oshawa Port Authority. “We’re committed to growing our business and driving the economy in a responsible way.”
Green Marine is the most comprehensive environmental program to date for the marine industry. The voluntary program was launched in 2007 by marine industry associations and companies to demonstrate the industry’s leadership in sustainable development. Originally conceived for the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River corridor, Green Marine has evolved into a North American program that’s steadily gaining support from ship owners in Europe as well as Australia.
“We are excited to welcome the Port of Oshawa into our program,” said David Bolduc, Green Marine’s Executive Director. “The greater the participation, the greater the contribution that the marine industry can make in setting the highest environmental standards.”
Green Marine requires participants to adopt practices and technologies that will have a direct impact, from limiting idling vehicle and equipment engines to reducing dust emissions. Green Marine’s certification process is rigorous and transparent, with results that are independently verified and published every two years.
“While the environment is already an important consideration, we’ll be looking at how the port can do better,” said Gary Valcour, Chair of the Oshawa Port Authority. “The goal is to find ways to reduce the port’s carbon footprint and go green whenever possible.”
